Ecole de Musique Dessaix Baptiste
Fritz Valesco (General Supervisor)
Rue Malgoire Ambroise, #60
Jacmel, Haiti, WI
Jacmel is often considered Haiti's "Cultural Capitol", or as the "City of Artists", but it wasn't until we visited Jacmel's Music School that it really began to dawn on us just how important the arts are to this small city. One might imagine that in the poorest economy in the Western Hemisphere, citizens would cut back on "luxuries" such as mastering a musical instument. To the contrary, this music academy plays host to up to 1200 students. Recently, the academy had to cut approximately 400 of its students and some of its teachers due to students inability to pay. This is an after school program and no student has any requirement to attend here. Visiting here, as in visiting many places here in Jacmel, we come to undersand what many of its citizens come to tell me. That Haiti has a third world economy, it does not have a third world mentality. Watching the passion and the focus of these students, and one can hardly disagree.
Sponsor a Child: for students is $5 US dollars a month. Though the building survived the earthquake, many of the instruments the school loans the students to take home with them were crushed in the earthquake. Use our Paypal and send a note david_fromgainesvillewithlove.org with a note Sponsor: Music School.
Partner your school with them: They are also interested in partnering with a school or group in the U.S. in a letter writing exchange.
Buy a t-shirt: 3WRO will donate enought to put one child to school for a month with every t-shirt purchased. www.thirdworldrelief.org

This is post-secondary eduction. Yes, Jacmel has a Nursing Program. Yes, they have a Business School. This is it. The Universities original multi-storied building is a shambles, frought with dangerous cracks. Too dangerous to hold sessi...on. The solution: Your'e looking at it. On the fringes of a muddy soccer field, bare bones wooden structures give a space for Jacmel's motivated University students.
Much is needed here, from classroom supplies, tuition assistance, and funding for modern instuments and textbooks.

Pastor Abraham Comfoer left for the States years ago to Study Education and then on to Seminary. But he could not stay away for long, for his Heart was in his home country. In his country, where he was needed most.
Returning to the island, ...he came with a vision, a vision of a school where Jacmel's most motivated students would be drawn to. A school that raised the bar higher than ever before of the expectations of it's student and that created a home for students that truly sought to be excellent.
Vie de France was that dream realized for him. Providing an atmosphere where students are encouraged to "think outside the box", and nurture their creativity and talents, Vie de France is quickly developing a reputation as a truly modern school of excellence with a National reputation.
All of Vie de France's 637 students begin studying English by the first grade and Pastor Abraham has a strong interest in partnering with a school in the west.
At current the school is in good structural shape. If there are any needs at all, it could be for the students who can no longer afford tuition. If interested in sponsoring a student, tuition for a student for a year is $300 US dollars, and Pastor Abraham pledged he could create a scholarship program for the students who needed it and wanted it the most.
This is an album of pictures taken by Pere (Father) Maxis Ridore. He is the priest of St. Jacques a church with a parish of about 300 haitians from the Oranges of Bainet region, and outskirt of Jacmel, Haiti. His church is a community center for the neighborhood, acting as a hurricane shelter, community gathering place, and school for the local children, with five classes resuming in september.
In time, Father Maxis hopes to rebuild the church that is now covered in tarps. But his first need is to have a classroom for the children. Currently they meet in church ruins. His hope is a permanent three room school house (style picture...d in rear of album). To erect would cost approximately $8000.
Crushed and destroyed. But continuing on. Sacred Heart of Meyer is a Parish without a Church. Here you see their efforts to rebuild, a priest grieves, a parishioner prays in a pew in the rain, and staff retains hope and good cheer througho...ut. If your church would like to sponsor Sacred Heart please contact:
